It’s not our job to toughen our children up to face a cruel and heartless world. It’s our job to raise children who will make the world a little less cruel and heartless.

Having spent many years in tech and start-ups, being exposed to entrepreneurship and bringing ideas to life, I often got a feeling of something not feeling quite right.
Ideas and businesses were being born left and right but their reason for existence felt hazy and vague.
When I asked questions like, “Why are you doing this?” or “What shifts do you seek to create in society?” or “How do you want your life to feel?”, I was often left with blank stares.
This felt like a major disconnection. A disparity between the innovator and his or her innovation. This, in fact, was the inspiration behind Bold Academy, The Alive Tribe and many of my pursuits since.
The driving curiosity is this: “What happens when the entrepreneur or creator is connected to the truth of who they are, and creates from that place?” That place of heart, purpose, values and principles, and a connection to something much larger than themselves. This possibility of what happens when *what we do* is in alignment with *who we are* is what drives me every day.
A few weeks ago, I led a workshop called “Heart-led innovation: Creating from the inside out.” In it we walked through a process of clarifying the creator’s reason for being and desired lifestyle, in parallel with the specific problem they seek to solve and how to reach product/market fit. The framework is called “be/feel/create,” and it’s especially relevant for anyone who’s felt misaligned with the work they do or burned out in the process of bringing something to life.
Be: Who am I? Why am I here?
Feel: How do I want ____ to feel? (That blank being your life, your project, your health, your relationship, or whatever area of focus that feels relevant.)
Create: Based on this, what do I want to make?
For context, here’s a personal example that’s taped in the front page of my journal. Whenever I feel overwhelmed or unsure, one read of this and I’m overcome by a wave of purpose and focus. It guides what I say ‘Yes’ to, and more importantly, what I say ‘No’ to.
Be: I am a lover. Writer. Speaker. Creator. Explorer. I come alive with blank canvases and the opportunity to make something from nothing. I question everything and live in the possibility of what could be. Moreover, I live for seeing that possibility become a reality. I am here to inspire and empower heart-led creatives and entrepreneurs to transform the world from the inside out.Feel: I imagine a life in which living, working, playing and loving are intertwined. From the mountains of California to the hipster cafes of Brooklyn to the islands of Greece, this is where the most inspired meetings, creations and experiences emerge. This way of being gives me a sense of freedom, expansion and a never-ending playground of inspiration, which fuels creativity and business building. Having my partner-in-crime alongside provides the grounding, support and systems thinking to expand the impact and reach. It’s here that I feel divinely feminine and fully me.Create: To bring who I am, what I’m here to do and how I envision life feeling to fruition, I create content, experiences, workshops and products (coming soon!) for heart-led creatives, entrepreneurs and brands.

As Jackson couldn’t fluently play any instruments, he would sing and beatbox out how he wanted his songs to sound by himself on tape, layering the vocals, harmonies and rhythm before having instrumentalists come in to complete the songs.

One of his engineers Robmix on how Jackson worked: “One morning MJ came in with a new song he had written overnight. We called in a guitar player, and Michael sang every note of every chord to him. “here’s the first chord first note, second note, third note. Here’s the second chord first note, second note, third note”, etc., etc. We then witnessed him giving the most heartfelt and profound vocal performance, live in the control room through an SM57. He would sing us an entire string arrangement, every part. Steve Porcaro once told me he witnessed MJ doing that with the string section in the room. Had it all in his head, harmony and everything. Not just little eight bar loop ideas. he would actually sing the entire arrangement into a micro-cassette recorder complete with stops and fills.”

Reasons why I laugh when people say he wasn’t a real musician.

AMAZING.
